Position Summary:

The ED behavioral health RN will be responsible for using current evidence-based knowledge and skills to assess psychiatric emergencies and to provide sound, professional care and crisis intervention services to patients. The position requires additional behavioral health training. The ED behavioral health RN will have positive interactions with local police departments, crisis workers, social services, emergency physicians, patients, families and significant others. The ED behavioral health RN is a a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources within the philosophy of the institution.


Diploma (Not HS) in Nursing and Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required within four (4) years

Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License Illinois upon hire and Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 1 year and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 1 year. National Nursing Certification Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification within 2 years.

Two (2) years of nurse experience


  • 10 hours continuing education in the field of psychiatric / behavioral health patient care bi-annually.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Certification annually

    Essential Functions:

    • Attend a minimum of 80% of ED Behavioral Health staff meetings per year.
    • Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service. Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
    • Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and that is based on patient and family needs. Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
    • Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
    • Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues. Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers, and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base. Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solution.
    • Maintains unit-specific and hospital competencies in accordance with policy and/or department requirements.
    • Completes relevant flow sheets and other medical records forms legibly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
    • Complete clinical documentation within agency standards. Maintains current knowledge of and abides by all applicable state and federal laws, Mental Health Code, DNV and CMS standards.
    • Understands and implements appropriate action to avoid power struggles with patients works as an effective team member to establish a milieu which minimizes the occurrence of aggressive behavior.
    • Provide support and training of other staff for the behavioral health population.
    • Maintains behavioral health department resources and calming cart materials. Assists in reviewing and updating department policies as needed.
    • Coordinates with the appropriate provider to arrange for admission and/or transfer to an appropriate psychiatric facility when necessary.
    • Uses current evidence-based knowledge and skills to assess psychiatric emergencies and to provide sound, professional treatment and crisis intervention services to patients.
    • Acts as a liaison with/for staff members in the emergency department and other medical units when needed.
      • Implements procedures and theories specific to ED nursing
      • Performs patient assessment and develops care plan in collaboration with providers, family and patient. Executes plan of care and nursing interventions. Modifies care plan based on continuous assessment.
      • Is responsible for patient and staff safety through appropriate nursing interventions, adhering to safety standards and correcting/reporting safety hazards
      • Effectively communicates/collaborates with staff, visitors and families to promote a healthy and healing work environment
      • Provides feedback to peers to aide in professional development, increase knowledge base and problem solve
      • Maintains accurate and up to date patient records/documentation
